In many ways Friday’s show is an ode to, and journey through, life in New York. Cold Blood Club draw much of their inspiration from the city that cradled the birth of their sound, and in turn deliver a style of pop that feels intrinsically now, inherently New York. The talented experimental artist ChemistReset adds to this atmosphere with his bold, city-bound electronica. His particular brand of music would be the perfect soundtrack for an “Enter The Void” type futuristic urban film, certain to invite the audience to indulge in escapism. Expect a mood that will pull you to the edge, and push you over, while revealing the multi-faceted nature of tonight’s artists, much like New York itself.

    Cold Blood Club

Grungy fuzzy upbeat pop emanates from the invigorating stage presence of Cold Blood Club as they create the sound of the quintessential Brooklyn house party (as is certainly their intention). Consider this the 2013 iteration of New Order and Depeche Mode influenced rock, deliciously translated into dance floor primed disco. The crafty balance of rock and electro brings to mind The Killers’ later records, but Cold Blood Club are bringing a new flavor while begging you to dance.

    ChemistReset

Insanely sexy, sultry (at times exotic) electric guitar is curiously paired with hyper-quick beats, creating the intriguing sound from ChemistReset. It’s absolutely experimental, but it still provides the audience with a point of accessibility, and even manages to be danceable sometimes. If Cold Blood Club aims to capture the sound of today’s New York, then ChemistReset is the sound of 2030 New York. Look beyond the thrilling chaos and you might just find something serenely beautiful.

    Vinyette

Vinyette strays from the electronic theme of the night to bring us a lively and interactive show based around alternative rock. At times they come off funky, at times dreamy, but consistently influenced by Pink Floyd. Their shows are dynamic, with several diverse and eye-catching performance tricks (rightfully earning them the title of “cinematic rock band”). Expect to be entertained by high quality performances from a group of guys that are no strangers to the stage (and consider this a reprieve from the EDM of the night).

There’s something shared about all of tonight’s performers. They are all fresh faced, but bring with them a sense of nostalgia and a feeling of lives well lived. This comes through in their lyrics and their sound. Nemiss is a hip-hop starlet, but her style is more grounded than many of today’s leading ladies. The remaining acts also exhibit a strong foundation in their music, a tendency to stay true to what their genres intended decades ago while still being relevant and very now. Hip Hop, R&B, Soul; these are some of the genres on display tonight, all of which will satisfy your craving with soulful, moving performances.

    Nemiss

Nemiss has been bordering on wide spread recognition for some time now, which is part of what makes her so wonderful. She delivers hip-hop in a way that makes her audience feel as though this is the real Nemiss, a genuine woman with a penchant for rhymes. Her lyrics are tight, and she doesn’t rely on the flashiness of so many of today’s female Hip-Hop stars. Instead, Nemiss’ femininity is intrinsic; she’s empowered, but without establishing it by dissing other women, bringing to mind another powerful woman of Hip-Hop in style and approach- Lauryn Hill.

    Arin Maya

Arin Maya is a stunning lyricist, blending her music with styles from folk to R&B, soul, and Jazz. The easiest comparison is India.Arie, especially Maya’s voice and guitar playing. Her music is emotive and intriguing- a personal story, beautifully relayed to an audience, with easily recognizable shared human experiences. Maya is sure to transfer a sense of joyfulness through her music; if you’re looking for something uplifting, this is for you.

    Guy Lockard

Guy Lockard’s polished R&B is influenced by reggae and pop, neatly packaged in cheeky lyrics and a soulful voice. A contemporary of his would be John Legend, but his style is also reminiscent of late 90s and early 00s R&B artists, like Craig David and early Usher- a refreshing approach to retro. His live performances get more soulful, including some incredible covers and instrumental fluidity.

Here are some great tracks we’ve been listening to recently at The Paper Box

    “Medicine (LuQus Remix)” by Daughter

This week I’ve been obsessed with LuQuos’ remix of Medicine by Daughter. Daughter is an Indie Folk band from London whose vocals are Elena Tonra. Her beautifully pure voice mixed with LuQu’s electric vibe are truly magical. Happy Listening!

    – Danie

    “The Swan” by Cheatahs

This is the my shoegaze dream: melodies, but not boring melodies. Singing, but not terrible singing. Fuzz, but not annoying fuzz. CHEATAHS ARE DOING IT, GUYS.

    -Tori

    “Pretty Boy” by Young Galaxy

I know this one has already made the rounds a bit, but come on, it’s just so good! Those synths! Also, I’m a sucker for anything Canadian any dreamy, and this is totally that. The remix made the rounds a few weeks ago, getting everybody all excited (pitchfork best new track) but I’m more into the original.

    - Matthew

    “Hyper Real” by Ital Tek

Ital Tek is a Brighton based electronic musician from Planet Mu Records. His new EP “Hyper Real” was just released this February.

    - Stevo

    “Ilumina Voz” by Helado Negro

Helado Negro’s new record is perfect to get you in the mood for Spring. This is where Dream Pop meets Tropicalia, and its great for chilling out and enjoying some beautiful weather. This track really stands out for me- the synth line that comes in at minute 2:30 gives me life!

Come shake your tail-feather against a literal wall of sound. The “Tower of Sound”, a 12,000 watt sound system, will be taking up residence in the PaperBox for one night only, ready to bust your eardrums, blow your mind, and give life to your dancing feet. Blasting through this exquisite sound system are a select group of Brooklyn’s dub purveyors; these are artists who continue to innovate and deliver the head-banging bass we adore even after the fad has past. Come early, find your spot as close to the tower of sound as you can, and prepare for take-off.

    Tour De Force

With production from Double Tiger and vocals from Brother Culture, Tour De Force incorporates reggae, hip-hop and dubstep into a powerful and hypnotizing sound. This is a re-working of dub-step into a style not easily discarded with the recent passing trends; where dub ceases to only be about the beat, without failing to maximize and exploit it. Instead you can jive to sexy reggae, grind to heavy dub, and indulge in original songwriting.

    Dub Gabriel

Dub Gabriel is no rookie, and his experience shines through in his daring idiosyncrasies. His lyrics and style bring to mind Grace Jones circa Corporate Cannibal days. Don’t let his heavy lyrics fool you; this is still an artist ready to rock his audience. His beats are entrancing, and his influences from the dub world incite some serious grooving. Not quite chilled-out dub, Dub Gabriel isn’t your typical mind melting dub step DJ. Instead his style is nuanced and provocative.

    Ticklah

Ticklah comes off as the most traditionally reggae artist from tonight’s line-up. From that point of departure, Ticklah has released many projects through diverse
genres. At times he dabbles in synthesized sounds, creating a melodious and modernized sounding reggae. This won’t be as intense as the rest of the line-up; instead it’s a different kind of pleasure, that channeled through the amazing sound system will surely transport you to another plane.

    True Nature

True Nature is mystifying and esoteric, with a seductive bass line sure to satisfy your brain’s need for chaos. His Indian influences are prominent, lending to his music an exotic allure. This is percussion at its best; original yet still within the confines of dub and reggae. True Nature is the ‘trippiest’ of tonight’s acts, and is likely to stimulate your senses into overload.

Arielle Avenia is the visionary behind Aftermath, a used art supply store located in the Silent Barn studios. Along with her business partner, Devin Lilly, Avenia opened up shop on March 1 of this year. We caught up with her for an interview:

“So what is Aftermath about?”

“Basically, I spent a long time in art school, accrued all of these supplies that I noticed people were just kind of discarding for no purpose other than that they were just moving or didn’t care enough to pick up after themselves…I’d been working with a lot of artists and seeing all the resources they require, and I thought it’d be really cool to be one of those resources for people…I consider this not just a shop, but an installation art project. I want it to be aesthetically pleasing, but it also has a greater purpose.”

“Is all of this stuff from donations?”

“I’d say maybe a fifth of it is mine, and then the rest of it is all donation. We probably had maybe 30 people donate to us in different ways.”

“That’s a lot of people.”

“Yeah, I have a spreadsheet.”

“Is it still coming in?”

“Yes; it’s amazing. I feel really lucky to have a very supportive community of people who want this to work…I feel like I’ve been handed the keys to the city because people will call me and say ‘I have all this stuff’… it’s like Christmas.”

“What are your best donations so far?”

“Someone gave me the key to their station wagon for two months to move stuff around, which was probably the most helpful donation…Someone else just gave us all of this Liquitex acrylic last week and I almost, like peed my pants, I was so excited…Also, my friend Ray Cross from Bushwick Print Lab gave us a lot of wood for the loft [which Avenia and Lilly built by hand, with the help of a few volunteers]…Beyond that, the best donation we got was from this art performance group named Cheryl…They were one of the first donations we had and just gave us the most incredible things…tons of paints and party supplies…this pile of sketchbooks…fabric, just everything you can imagine.”

“How is being a part of the Silent Barn?”

“I think it’s a super great place to incubate ideas…The coolest thing about Silent Barn is that it’s an all-ages venue, so maybe [people will] come for the art supplies and see the music, or come for the music and see the art supplies… I think it’s a great resource for college kids-or anyone in general-but especially the college population in Manhattan who’s kind of clueless about what’s going in Brooklyn or curious about any kind of underground DIY scene.”

“Are you ever going to sell anything you make here?”

“I feel like that kind of deviates from the purpose of this place. It’s not about my art. It’s about other people making art.”

“Any future plans?”

“We want to run some workshops here eventually. I have seven sewing machines, so I want to get them fixed and teach people how to sew, because I think that’s important to know how to do. And maybe this is super crazy and hoarder-y of me, but I want to start saving dryer lint so that I can make paper…I’m just really interested in using recycled stuff to make other stuff that you want.”

“How is business so far?”

“Right now it’s kind of just my social network that’s still finding out about this place… The next step is more of a public outreach and having other artists know that we exist [but] I go back and forth. I like that we’re kind of secret…that it’s something where people kind of wander back here and are like, ‘Is this your studio? Is this a store?’ Yep, both!

Honestly, it’s worth it to me to pay the rent on this space to just play shop and have my office upstairs…to have a say in the collective, to be able to interact with the community. If every once in a while we sell a little pot of ink, that’s great too.”

Aftermath is usually open 3-4 nights per week during shows at the Silent Barn (603 Bushwick Ave.). Stop by and stock up! Check them out on Facebook.

Here are some great tracks we’ve been listening to at The Paper Box

“Alone With You” by Phebe Starr

Phebe Starr hails from Australia and like her name she is seriously going to be an amazing star. Her sweet vocals paired with the driving beat of the drums makes this song a true Electro Pop Gem. Happy Listening!

- Danielle

“Home” by Austra

Feel It Break was one of my favorite records of 2010, and I’ve been eager to hear more from Austra ever since. This track is the lead single off their new record Olympia, which will be out in June. It has the same incredible vocal melodies as their old stuff, but a more organic percussive quality, and more raw, direct lyrics.

- Matthew

“Sunrise” by Moon Tides

As Loud As The Sun came out last year, and these guys have already opened for Tennis, so I’m pretty late to this party, I guess. But here’s what I don’t get: They’re from Colorado. How do they know so much about surfing??? This is dream pop gold, people, and it makes me miss California something awful.

-Tori

“Mahdi” by The Underachievers

The Underachievers are an emerging hip-hop act from Flatbush in Brooklyn. Self-proclaimed “indigo children,” their debut mixtape “Indigoism” was just released on February 1st. They are about to go on tour to support Pro Era (with Joey Bada$$) and Flatbush Zombies.

- Stevo

“Take it Slow” by Andrew Ashong

Another stellar neo-soul release. I’m loving the funky bass/synth; It sounds like something taken from a 90s adventure game set in space (Space Quest anyone?). Ashong’s retro vocal stylings are the icing on the cake.

Tonight is post-hardcore alternative rock across the board, although through diverse manifestations. Consider it the new wave of the well-established top dogs in the industry. These are bands following in the footsteps of Radiohead and Copeland, reintroducing audiences to a brand of rock that has been distant in the recent musical past. Polyenso and Author are a bit more finessed, while The Walking Tree is going to give hardcore fans their intensity fix. This should provide a nice arc in energy, so don’t miss out- some of these are serious up-and-coming acts in the rock world.

Tickets Here

Polyenso

Post-hardcore Polyenso (previously known as Oceania) is alternative-ambient rock gold. Recently releasing their first full-length One Big Particular Loop. It feels as though they’ve finally established a signature sound. The most obvious comparison would be to alt rock juggernauts Radiohead, but there are also influences from R.E.M., and a bit of jazz and soul. There’s even a track that’s electronic pop-funk; expect a band true to its roots with hints of innovation.

The Walking Tree

In the vein of Life in Your Way, this is hardcore rock delivered in a recognizable package. Using only guitar, bass, and drums, The Walking Tree establishes a sound that exists outside of the times of today’s rock. Lyrically, the themes they explore contrast with their sound, leading us through forgiveness and transformation. Many of these songs could be about God, and while their website pledges that their music is also worship, it certainly isn’t only that.

Author

Author is an alternative rock band with beautiful lyrics and vocals over a thoughtfully produced array of guitar, bass, drums, and synthesized decorations. Trevor Bartlett, lead vocalist, varies between gentle whispers and heart-tugging yells, unabashedly pulling his audience in and satisfying them. Copeland’s frontman Aaron Marsh actually helped produce this record from his home studio, and his influences are not easily disguised. In fact, Author is artfully filling the void left by Copeland’s retreat.

Rachel Brotman and Mike Brun have long wanted to construct a bill together, and they’ve done so in a thoughtful manner while tapping into a musical narrative. Aviva Jaye opens the show with her own brand of soul music. Following is Mike Brun, an eccentric, likely to include some experimental pieces. The talented Rachel Brotman headlines with seasoned style of traditional jazz. Stick around for the closer, formidable folk-rockers Noble Hunter. Not only are the sets sure to compliment each other, but they also capture a perspective of the expression of soul and jazz throughout the Brooklyn music scene.

    Tickets Here

    Facebook Event

    Rachel Brotman

Smoothly romantic, Brotman’s crooning vocals are nostalgic; a sepia toned vehicle for her poetic and creative lyricism. Her band in its current iteration is in harmonious sync, highlighting soft percussion and jazzy piano. There is an element of improvisation, but its experimental facets are spring boarded off of traditional jazz structures and chords. Instead Brotman delivers the delicious syncopation that jazz fiends adore, and plenty of time signature changes, while remaining elegant. While Brotman is more improvisational than some of her contemporaries, she is reminiscent of Norah Jones, Feist, and Gretchen Parlato.

    Noble Hunter

Noble Hunter’s lead singer Kevin Garrett’s voice incorporates pop and soul to the band’s already tight harmonies and sultry guitar riffs, creating an electrifying folk-rock sound. It wouldn’t be a far throw to compare Noble Hunter to Ray Lamontagne, with gorgeous guitar lines combing through moving lyrics, melodies, and harmonies. They are certain to provide a multi-dimensional live music experience; dulcet, affective songs with moments that allow you to tastefully rock out. While their debut record is hailed for being the number one folk album on Bandcamp, it seems minimizing- Noble Hunter isn’t just folk. It’s folk, soul, and rock, delivered fluently.

    Mike Brun

Mike Brun’s musical background, from a cappella to trumpet to experimental theater, is as diverse as his current sound, which is difficult to peg. His music is experimental, but contains a strong narrative, carefully arranged and segued. It’s ambient and acoustic with deep harmonies at times. On the other end of the pendulum his work contains palette cleanses between songs made up of movie samples or spoken word, among other tendencies. At his most accessible, Brun’s voice and soulful indie rock style shines through and is almost evocative of, dare I say it, Jason Mraz, and in another sense Iron And Wine. But Brun refuses to be boxed in, and this show will be anything but ordinary; expect the unexpected.

Expect a show full of modern day classics. Headliner Chrissi Poland fuses soul and electro-pop to deliver a magnificently fun show, full of powerful vocals and enduring character. Emanuel Gibson and Jen Jayden are both blues classicists. They possess that soulful and uncontainable persona that’s necessary for stardom; sure to take their audiences back to the days of sweaty, beer induced blues trances. Newcomers Star and The Sea and The Dedication provide the much needed ingénue factor, introducing themselves with interesting sounds and some recognizable covers that should please the crowd.

Chrissi Poland

This is one artist to follow. Her electro-pop soul, while it could be stylistically compared to Duffy, is in a league on its own. It’s intense, electrifying, and fun, and Poland’s voice is an incredible instrument, full of a lifetime of soul. Additionally, She’s known for her engaging shows and powerful stage presence (she’s toured with pop glam titans Scissor Sisters). Poland is sure to leave her audience with that elevated state of being only a truly exciting and captivating showstopper can create.

Emanuel Gibson

Blues runs through Gibson’s veins and he demonstrates the talents and intrigue of the very best. He is self-described as James Brown meets the Black Keys, and it’s a fitting categorization. He’s also like something of a cross between Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix. His show is sure to be one of timeless proportions, and transporting qualities, as his electric guitar and bass tickle your fancy and remind the audience of ‘simpler’ times.

Jen Jayden & The Greenstone

Jen Jayden’s vocal mood and performance style bring to mind the great Janis Joplin, soulful and scratchy in all the right places, whispery and enticing in all the best ways. She’s also been compared to Grace Potter and Adele, although her particular brand of music feels more unhinged. Her musical vibe is classic blues down to every last note. It seems to come so naturally to her, and her unabashed rocking out promises an exhilarating live performance.
