It’s not opening up until sometime this December 2011, but The Paper Box is already building up quite the buzz throughout Williamsburg, Brooklyn and the surrounding area. What used to be a factory in the 1920s, and then later turned into a very unkempt storage facility for old furniture, is now becoming an epicenter for music and arts collaboration.
The space is going to fulfill a wide range of needs within the music and arts community including rehearsal space, audio recording, video production, as well as studio space for theater groups and visual artists. In addition, The Paper Box will be hosting an assortment of live events on weekdays and weekends, including concerts, art shows, and other performances.
“We don’t want to pigeon-hole ourselves in anyway,” explains Corrie, who has been working at The Paper Box since it’s inception. We’re a part of a creative community that will always evolve and adapt.”
Since the place was first picked up in late August 2011, a lot of progress has already been made to get it built. The first couple of weeks were mostly spent cleaning out the place: moving out old, abandoned furniture, and shoveling piles of dirt and dust into waste bags. Here’s some pictures of the progress below:
As the days go by, The Paper Box is coming together more and more. Neighbors are constantly walking by, poking their heads in, seeing the progress that is being made, and becoming more and more excited to see The Paper Box reach its completion.
One local at the restaurant New Town (previously known as Yummus Hummus) said, “We need more places like this around here. A lot of venues have been dying out since the 90s. It’s great to see that others are taking the initiative to keep Brooklyn a thriving place for music and art.”
A lot of people seem to feel the same way, which is why The Paper Box is building the hype that it is.
